A Special Arrival to Kick OFF February

February started on a high note as Copperbeech Star decided to foal a little earlier than expected, delivering a fabulous colt by Glencarrig Knight. This cross has proven successful in the past, producing quality foals such as Copperbeech Emperor, Copperbeech Duchess, and last year’s filly, Copperbeech Jewel. Naturally, we had high hopes for this latest arrival, and he has certainly not disappointed.

The bank holiday Monday had been unfolding at a nice, relaxed pace until we noticed Copperbeech Polly standing far out in the field, keeping a close watch over Copperbeech Star. Even from a distance, something about her posture told us to investigate. Polly has always been attentive, but this level of concern made it clear that Star was foaling. The real question was—how long had she been in labor, and was she in any difficulty?

We set off across the field on foot, and as we got closer, we could see the foal’s head and one front leg already delivered. With careful timing, we assisted with the shoulders to ensure a smooth arrival. Thankfully, the morning was dry but windy, and within minutes, the newborn was up on all fours, wobbling his way into the world. With Copperbeech Star now settled, we led them both to the yard for a thorough health check.

Everything progressed as we’d hoped—the colt was up and nursing within an hour, and Star had cleansed within two and a half hours. With both mare and foal comfortable and resting, we could finally exhale and take in the moment.

We’re excited to watch this little fella grow and unfold, and we’ll be sharing updates, including photos, on our  Facebook page  in the coming days. Now, the focus shifts to the next mare, who is due towards the end of the month—more excitement to come!
